Zidovudine molecular structure

Zidovudine

Also known as: Retrovir, Zidovir, Zidovex (component of Combivir, Duovir, Trioday)

CAS Number: 30516-87-1

Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NRTI)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPIPEPBPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Zidovudine is a thymidine analogue in which the 3-hydroxyl group is replaced by an azido group. Cellular thymidine kinase and downstream kinases convert it to zidovudine triphosphate, which competitively inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase relative to thymidine triphosphate. Once incorporated, the azido group prevents formation of the next phosphodiester bond and terminates proviral DNA elongation.
